ABOUT US
San Pedro Fit Works was founded on a simple conviction: personal training should be built on education, not trends. Every personal trainer on our team holds a degree in kinesiology, exercise science, or a related field. That's not a hiring preference, it's a requirement. Our group fitness instructors bring specialized certifications and years of coaching experience across cycling, suspension training, ELDOA, and more.
We're an appointment-only personal training and group fitness studio operating out of two locations in San Pedro, California. The personal training facility on 8th Street is where our one-on-one personal training and semi-private training happens. Studio B on 7th Street is home to our group fitness classes: Cycle, TRX, ELDOA, Circuit Training, Core + Mobility, and Zumba.
Our approach starts with understanding how you move. Before any programming begins, we conduct a $49 movement assessment to identify your strengths, limitations, and goals. When you become a member, that fee applies directly to your first month's membership. From there, every session is built with purpose, not pulled from a template.
We believe training frequency matters more than session length. Most of our clients train in focused 30-minute sessions two to three times per week. The science supports it, our programming reflects it, and our results confirm it.
San Pedro Fit Works was founded by Matt Leu (M.S. Kinesiology, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo), who personally oversees every client's programming and mentors every trainer on staff.
We've extended our impact beyond the studio through our partnership with Cal State Long Beach's Kinesiology program, hosting interns who gain hands-on experience in a professional training environment.
San Pedro Fit Works is where education meets application. Serving San Pedro, the South Bay, and the greater Los Angeles area. No gimmicks. No filler. Just serious coaching from people who understand the science behind the work.
OUR APPROACH
Assessment First:
Every client's program begins with a professional movement assessment. We evaluate how you move before we prescribe how to train. Your program is built from what we find, not from a template.
Frequency Over Duration:
We believe how often you train matters more than how long each session lasts. Most of our clients train in focused 30-minute sessions two to three times per week, and our programming is designed around that principle. 60-minute sessions are available for clients whose goals or movement complexity call for extended time.
Movement Over Perfection:
Consistency in movement matters more than following the plan to the letter. Some days you show up feeling great. Some days you don't. We adjust. Movement is medicine, and our coaches know how to mold a session around restrictions, fatigue, or a rough week without losing the thread of your progress. Showing up matters more than showing up perfect.
Team-Based Coaching:
Clients training two or more times per week work with multiple coaches by design. Different trainers bring different perspectives to your movement. Your programming is documented and shared across our coaching staff so every session builds on the last, regardless of who's coaching it. This isn't a scheduling convenience. It's how we produce better outcomes.
Total Load Management:
Rule one: respect your reality. Life doesn't pause for your training schedule. We check in, listen, and pivot when your week, your stress, or your body calls for a different approach. For athletes, we periodize your program to prevent overtraining while maximizing progressive overload across your full competitive calendar.
Coaching, Not Supervising:
Our personal trainers hold degrees in kinesiology and exercise science. That means they read your movement in real time, identify compensations, and adjust your program based on what they see, not just what's written on a whiteboard. The difference between a coach and a supervisor is the ability to see what's actually happening and know what to do about it. That's what education provides.
WHO WE TRAIN
Strength, Body Composition & Weight Management
You want to build muscle, lose weight, or hit a personal record with a coach who builds a real program, not a random workout.
Cardiovascular Health & Conditioning
You're not training for a race. You just want to feel better, move easier, and build a conditioning habit that sticks.
Endurance & Event Athletes
You're training for a 5K, marathon, triathlon, century ride, or Ironman and need periodized programming built around your race calendar.
Sport-Specific & Competitive Athletes
You compete at the high school, club, or collegiate level and need strength, speed, and conditioning that works around your sport schedule.
Post-Physical Therapy & Return to Function
You've been discharged from PT and need a guided, progressive return to full activity alongside your medical team.
Mobility & Corrective Movement
You're not injured, but your body isn't moving the way it should. Desk workers, active adults, chronic tightness, postural issues.
YOUR EXPERIENCE
Private Facility, Appointment Only:
When you train at San Pedro Fit Works, the space is yours. No crowded floor, no waiting for equipment, no navigating around other sessions. Our appointment-only model means every session happens in a controlled, focused environment designed for coaching, not traffic.
Maintained to a Standard:
Our facility is clean. Really clean. We strive to sanitize equipment, clean floors and wipe every surface on the daily to allow you to focus on your workout and community. Equipment is maintained, organized, and ready before you walk in. We manage our schedule to ensure adequate time between appointments for a full facility reset. The details matter, and we treat the space the same way we treat your programming: with intention.
Small Classes, By Design:
Group fitness classes are capped at 6 to 10 participants. That's not a space limitation, it's a coaching decision. At that size, your instructor can see your form, offer corrections, and provide individual attention. Bigger classes are louder. Smaller classes are better coached.
No Long-Term Contracts:
All memberships and training plans are 1 or 2 month autopay plans. No long-term commitments, no cancellation penalties. We keep clients by earning their trust, not by locking them in.
San Pedro, Through and Through:
We are proud to have "San Pedro" in our name. We live here, we coach here, and we hire from here. Our partnership with Cal State Long Beach's Kinesiology program brings local graduates into the profession, and several of our current coaches started as interns in our facility. This community shaped us, and we're invested in giving back to it.
KNOW YOUR TEAM. KNOW YOUR NETWORK.
Our coaches stay within their professional scope. We provide generalized nutritional guidance as part of our coaching, but we do not create specific meal plans, prescribe supplements, or replace the role of a registered dietitian. When your needs extend beyond exercise programming, we maintain referral relationships with trusted local professionals in nutrition, physical therapy, and sports medicine so you're connected to the right person. Staying in our lane isn't a limitation. It's how we protect your outcomes and maintain the standard our credentials represent.
