The Degree Difference
Every personal trainer at San Pedro Fit Works holds a university degree in kinesiology or exercise science. Here is what that means, and why it matters for your training.
THe Two Paths
How Most Trainers Qualify
The fitness industry runs on certifications. Most personal training certifications are self-paced study programs that end in a multiple-choice exam. Many can be completed in a few weeks. Some take a weekend. There is no supervised practice requirement, no lab work, and no independent verification that the trainer can apply what the exam covered. A certification confirms that someone passed a test about exercise. It does not confirm that they understand the body the exercise is acting on.
None of this makes certified trainers bad at their jobs. Many are excellent. It means the credential itself guarantees very little, and clients have no easy way to tell the difference from the outside.
How Our Trainers Qualify
A bachelor's degree in kinesiology or exercise science takes four years. The coursework covers human anatomy, biomechanics, exercise physiology, motor learning, motor control, exercise prescription, and research methods. It includes laboratory work and supervised internships in real training environments. A master's degree adds two or more years of advanced study and original research on top of that.
This is the education of someone who studied how the human body is built, how it moves, how it adapts to training, and how to read the scientific research that keeps that knowledge current. Every personal trainer at San Pedro Fit Works holds this degree. It is a condition of employment, not a preference.
WHy it Matters for you
Your program is built on adaptation science, not a template
Exercise works because the body adapts to specific demands in predictable ways. A coach who studied exercise physiology programs from those principles: how much load, how much recovery, what sequence, what progression. A template asks what worked for someone else. Your program asks what your body needs next.

Your movement is assessed by someone trained to see it
Anatomy and biomechanics coursework trains a coach to watch you move and understand what is happening at the level of joints, muscles, and force. When your squat looks off, a degreed coach can distinguish a mobility limitation from a stability problem from a motor pattern issue, because those are different problems with different solutions.

Your coach knows where coaching ends
Scope of practice is part of the education. When something falls outside our lane, your coach recognizes it and refers you to a physical therapist or physician. We work alongside local medical providers, not in place of them. Knowing what not to treat is part of what the degree teaches.

Your coach can read the research
Fitness trends move fast and most of them are marketing. A degree includes training in research methods: how studies work, what evidence means, and how to tell a finding from a fad. When your coach makes a programming decision, there is a reason behind it that survives scrutiny.

The Structure Behind the Standard
The degree is the floor. The structure at San Pedro Fit Works is what raises it.

Most trainers in this industry work as independent contractors. They rent floor space, work alone, and have no colleagues reviewing their programming, no mentor developing their skills, and no system behind their decisions. However talented, they operate without structure.

Every personal trainer at San Pedro Fit Works works as a full member of a structured coaching team. Your program is designed under one methodology and overseen by our owner, Matt Leu, who holds an M.S. in Kinesiology from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and taught human anatomy at the college level. Every session is documented to a shared standard, so any coach on our staff can pick up your training exactly where you left off. Trainers here are mentored, reviewed, and developed continuously.

Education is what our coaches bring in the door. The team structure is what keeps them growing after it.

We also invest in the next generation of degreed professionals: San Pedro Fit Works hosts kinesiology interns through our partnership with Cal State Long Beach, giving students the supervised practice environment their degree requires.
Certifications & degrees:
Where we stand
Reputable certifications document real study, and specialty certifications add genuine depth. Several of our coaches hold them on top of their degrees, and our group fitness instructors bring specialized certifications and years of experience to every class. Good coaching exists across every credential.

But depth of preparation matters. A four-year scientific education in how the body moves is a different foundation than a weekend course, and we built this studio on that difference.

A degree alone is not the finished product either. Coaching is a craft, built through years of hands-on work with real people. So we hire for the education, then build the craft: mentorship, team review, and thousands of coaching hours. Education, structure, and experience. That is the standard here, and every client trains under it.
FAQ
What is the difference between a certified personal trainer and a degreed personal trainer?
A certified personal trainer has passed an exam offered by a certifying organization, typically after a self-paced study program lasting weeks to months. A degreed personal trainer holds a university degree in kinesiology or exercise science: four or more years of coursework in anatomy, biomechanics, exercise physiology, and motor learning, with lab work and supervised internships. The degree represents a substantially deeper scientific education in how the human body moves and adapts.

Do the personal trainers at San Pedro Fit Works have degrees?
Yes. Every personal trainer at San Pedro Fit Works holds a university degree in kinesiology or exercise science. It is a requirement of employment. San Pedro Fit Works is the only training studio in San Pedro where every personal trainer holds a degree in the science of human movement.

What is kinesiology?
Kinesiology is the scientific study of human movement. The field draws on anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, and motor learning to understand how the body moves, how it adapts to exercise, and how movement relates to health, performance, and injury.

Does a degree matter more than experience?
They matter together. A degree provides the scientific foundation; experience builds the coaching craft. At San Pedro Fit Works, every trainer brings both: formal education in movement science and hands-on coaching developed through our mentorship and team review system.

Do your group fitness instructors also hold degrees?
Our group fitness instructors bring specialized certifications and years of coaching experience across cycling, suspension training, ELDOA, Zumba, and more. Several also hold degrees in kinesiology or related sciences. The degree requirement applies to our personal training staff.

Who oversees the programming at San Pedro Fit Works?
All client exercise programming is overseen by owner and lead coach Matt Leu, who holds an M.S. in Kinesiology from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, teaches human anatomy at the college level, and has coached since 2004.
